Yoga for Anxiety, Stress and Overwhelm

 

This 12 week program has been developed to provide a mind-body approach to reduce anxiety, stress and overwhelm. When stressed, anxious and overwhelmed the nervous system becomes over activated leading to the stress response or what is commonly known as fight or flight. When we feel anxious, stressed and/or overwhelmed we can experience panic attacks, hot and cold flushes, inability to concentrate, a racing heart, constant worry, tightening of the chest, feelings of dread, quick breathing or shortness of breath, difficulty sleeping, teeth grinding, problem solving, headaches, racing mind, brain fog, confusion, issues with balance, exhaustion, pain and the list goes on.

One key to managing anxiety, stress and overwhelm is to reduce the activation of the nervous system so you can feel more at ease and calm. Over the next 12 weeks you will be introduced to how the psychology of stress, anxiety and overwhelm can be integrated with yoga practices to reduce tension and promote relaxation to calm the body and mind. Yoga postures, mindfulness exercises and breathing practices that are effective in reducing stress, overwhelm and anxiety have been chosen. This is important because some yoga, mindfulness and breathing practices are too activating for the nervous system which is the opposite of what you need when anxious, stressed and overwhelmed.

This program is designed to provide you with a range of practical skills to empower you to shift your nervous system from fight or flight into rest and restore so that you can show up in the world as your authentic self. When we show up in the world as our authentic self, when we let down out guard and can trust in our body and feel safe we are able to be present with our families, apply for the job that we want or go for the promotion we deserve, we participate in social gatherings and exhibit a sense of peace, calm and inner harmony that the people around you will sense, see and remark on.

Module 1- Understanding Anxiety, Stress, Overwhelm and the Role of Mind-Body Practices

The program begins with an introduction to the relationship between the psychology of stress, overwhelm and anxiety, and the role of yoga practices in the healing process. Yoga postures and mindfulness practices for quieting an overactive mind and nervous system will be practiced. The session will culminate in a vinyasa practice to connect the body and mind and integrate the learnings of the module.

Module 2 - The Relationship Between Unhelpful Self-Talk, and Stress and Anxiety

This module explores how thoughts and the way we talk to ourselves contribute to stress, overwhelm and anxiety. Yoga practices that increase mindful awareness of thoughts and changing unhelpful self-talk will be practiced. The session will end with restorative poses to increase relaxation and a nourishing yoga nidra practice meditation to help you release emotional tension and slow down your nervous system.

Module 3 - The physical benefits of yoga

This module explores the physical benefits of yoga and how a consistent practice of yoga can contribute to an increase in your flexibility, energy, lung capacity, a reduction in the incidence of pain and an increase in strength and muscle. We explore this module further with chair yoga - recognising that limited mobility can still mean physical mobility and limitations of the body do not prevent experiencing the benefits of yoga.

Module 4 - Philosophy - The breadth and depth of yoga

This module explores yoga in all its glory. Giving you a taste of the principles of yoga, the doshas, the chakras and the kleshas. We culminate the beauty and enormity of yoga (in its entirety) in an incredible slow flow.

​

Module 5 - Breathing and Relaxation Skills

This module introduces you to how connecting your breath to movement through yoga postures can create a sense of ease and calmness.  Muscle relaxation exercises that reduce tension and help you reset will also be introduced. Breathing exercises designed to calm the nervous system will also be introduced along with an introduction to mantras, mudras and affirmations. The module will end with a nourishing yin yoga practice to deepen your connection to the mind and body.

Module 6 - Awareness of the Body

In the final module, we will be tying it all together and have a conversation on spirituality. We will be consciously practicing awareness of the body-mind connection and how the skills practised in the program can be applied to everyday life.

You’ll be able to take the knowledge you’ve learnt from this program with you and practice on your own post the 12 week program to continue to find relief from stress, anxiety and overwhelm and engage in the world like never before.
