The Benefits of Outdoor Yoga: How Nature, Movement & Mindfulness Support Wellbeing
Why practising yoga outside may offer more than a beautiful view.
Have you ever noticed that yoga feels a little different when you take your mat outside?
There is something about moving beneath an open sky, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin or a gentle breeze across your face, hearing birdsong in the background and having space around you.
At Sparkling Soul Yoga, I love outdoor yoga for all of these reasons.
And while we need more research specifically looking at the combination of yoga and outdoor environments, there is growing evidence for the individual benefits of both yoga and spending time in nature.
When we bring the two together, something quite special can happen.

Nature and stress
Modern life can be incredibly stimulating.
Emails. Notifications. Traffic. Screens. Deadlines. Noise.
Spending time in natural environments gives us an opportunity to step away from some of that stimulation.
Research into nature exposure has found associations with reduced stress, improved mood and greater psychological restoration.
And you don't necessarily need to spend hours hiking through a forest to experience it.
Sometimes it can be as simple as sitting beneath a tree, walking through a park or rolling out your yoga mat on the grass.
The sounds of nature
One of my favourite things about outdoor yoga is the soundtrack.
Not a carefully curated playlist.
The birds.
The rustling leaves.
The breeze moving through the trees.
The sounds of people passing by.
Natural sounds have been studied for their potential effects on stress, mood and restoration, with birdsong being one of the natural sounds that has attracted particular research interest.
When you practise outside, these sounds become part of your mindfulness practice.
You don't need to block everything out.
Instead, you can simply notice.
What can you hear?
What can you feel?
What can you see?
And then gently return to your breath and your movement.

Yoga brings movement and breath into the experience
Yoga itself brings another layer to the experience.
Mindful movement.
Conscious breathing.
Balance.
Strength.
Mobility.
Body awareness.
The intention isn't simply to make the body work harder.
It's to become more aware of what is happening within the body and mind.
When we practise slowly and intentionally, we create opportunities to pause, notice and reconnect.
Taking that practice outdoors adds another sensory dimension.
Feeling the sun and the breeze
There are things about outdoor yoga that are difficult to put into words.
The warmth of the sun on your shoulders.
A cool breeze across your skin.
Your feet connecting with the ground.
The changing light.
The clouds moving overhead.
These simple sensory experiences bring us into the present moment.
Instead of thinking about what happened yesterday or what needs to happen tomorrow, for a few minutes we are simply here.
And then there are the things you can't measure
Some of my favourite parts of outdoor yoga probably wouldn't make it into a research paper.
Like the dogs.
There is almost always a dog walking past who decides that the yoga class is far more interesting than whatever their human had planned.
Or the birds who sometimes seem to be sitting nearby, singing along with the class.
Sometimes there is a rainbow.
Sometimes the morning light is just beautiful.
Sometimes the breeze picks up during savasana and you suddenly realise how relaxed you feel.
And sometimes nothing particularly exciting happens at all.
You simply lie on your mat, look up at the sky and breathe.
And that's enough.

Outdoor yoga and community
There is another important part of outdoor yoga that shouldn't be overlooked: connection.
Practising alongside other people can create a sense of community and belonging.
You don't need to be the most flexible person in the group.
You don't need to look a certain way.
You don't need to have previous yoga experience.
You can simply arrive as you are.
This is central to what I believe at Sparkling Soul Yoga.
Yoga should be accessible and inclusive.
It should be something that supports our physical and mental wellbeing rather than something that makes us feel like we aren't good enough.
You don't need a perfect setting
One of the beautiful things about outdoor yoga is that it doesn't have to be perfect.
You don't need a picturesque mountain view.
You don't need a tropical beach.
You don't even need a particularly sunny day.
A local park can be enough.
Your backyard can be enough.
A quiet patch of grass can be enough.
You can practise for five minutes or an hour.
The important thing is creating a little space to move, breathe and reconnect.
So, why outdoor yoga?
The research around nature and wellbeing gives us plenty of reasons to step outside.
Yoga gives us another way to connect with our bodies, breath and minds.
And when we bring the two together, we create an opportunity to slow down and engage with the world around us.
Maybe that's why outdoor yoga can feel so nourishing.
We're not just moving our bodies.
We're listening.
We're feeling.
We're noticing.
We're breathing.
We're connecting.
And sometimes, wellbeing doesn't need to be complicated.
A mat.
A breath.
A little sunshine.
Some birdsong.
Maybe a friendly dog wandering past.
And permission to simply be.
That's outdoor yoga.
And that's a little bit of the Sparkling Soul Yoga magic.
