Burnout in Women: Signs, Symptoms and How to Recover Before It’s Too Late

Burnout in women is becoming increasingly common - especially for those balancing work, family, and the invisible mental load of daily life.

This morning, I had a conversation that stayed with me.

A friend - a woman in her late 30s, a mum of two, capable, intelligent, holding so much - shared that she hasn’t been feeling like herself.

She’s been experiencing irritability, anger, deep fatigue… that sense of being constantly on edge.

Her first thought was perimenopause.

But after speaking with her doctor, the answer was something many women don’t expect:

Burnout. Overwhelm.

Research shows:

  • Around 1 in 2 women report experiencing burnout at some point

  • Women are more likely than men to experience chronic stress and emotional exhaustion

  • Mothers balancing work and caregiving carry a significantly higher mental load and overwhelm

  • Rates of burnout in women have continued to rise in recent years

So if you’re feeling stretched, exhausted, or constantly “on”…This is not a personal failure.

It’s a very real and very common experience.


Symptoms of Burnout in Women

Burnout often builds slowly, which is why it can be easy to miss.

Common signs of burnout in women include:

  • Ongoing fatigue - even after rest

  • Irritability, frustration, or emotional reactivity

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks

  • Poor sleep or waking already tired

  • Headaches, muscle tension, or physical discomfort

  • Loss of motivation or joy

  • Feeling disconnected, numb, or mentally drained

Sometimes burnout is mistaken for hormonal changes or “just being busy”.

But your body is sending you a message.


Why Women Struggle to Slow Down

One of the biggest challenges with burnout is not awareness…It’s action.

Many women know they are overwhelmed - but feel like they can’t stop.

It starts with small, sustainable changes.

You might begin with:

  • Saying no to one thing that drains you

  • Asking for help and allowing yourself to receive it

  • Taking real breaks instead of pushing through

  • Moving your body in a way that supports your nervous system

  • Creating moments of rest without guilt

These small steps help regulate your system and create space to breathe again.
